NBA betting glossary of key terms and definitions for UK punters

NBA betting terminology is a hybrid language. Half the vocabulary comes from American sportsbook culture, half from UK bookmaking tradition, and the overlap is where confusion breeds. A «parlay» and an «accumulator» are the same bet. A «spread» and a «handicap» describe the same market. «Juice» and «vig» and «overround» all refer to the bookmaker’s margin, depending on which side of the Atlantic you learned your terms. Around 10% of UK adults bet on sport online, and anyone joining the NBA betting market for the first time encounters this terminological maze within minutes. This glossary translates it all into plain language, organised alphabetically and tied to the NBA context specifically.

A-F: Accumulator to Futures

Accumulator (Acca) — A single bet combining multiple selections. All legs must win for the bet to pay out. The American equivalent is «parlay.» In NBA, a typical acca might combine moneyline picks from three or four separate games into one betslip. The combined odds are the product of each individual selection’s odds.

Against the Spread (ATS) — A team’s record when measured against the point spread rather than simply winning or losing. A team can be 30-20 straight up but 25-25 ATS if they frequently win by fewer points than the spread requires. ATS records are a staple of NBA handicapping analysis.

Bankroll — The total amount of money you have set aside specifically for betting. Not your savings, not your monthly budget — a ring-fenced sum. Bankroll management is the discipline of sizing each bet relative to this amount.

Closing Line — The final odds on a market at the moment betting closes, typically just before tip-off. Closing lines are considered the most efficient market price because they reflect all available information and wagering action. Consistently beating the closing line is the strongest indicator of a profitable bettor.

Cover — To win against the point spread. If a team is favoured by 5.5 points and wins by 7, they «covered.» If they win by 4, they did not cover despite winning the game outright.

Decimal Odds — An odds format that expresses the total return per pound staked. Odds of 2.50 mean a 1-pound bet returns 2.50 (1.50 profit plus 1.00 stake). Common on European platforms and an option at most UK bookmakers.

Dog / Underdog — The team expected to lose, reflected by higher odds. In NBA, underdogs on the moneyline return a profit greater than the stake if they win.

Edge — The advantage a bettor has over the bookmaker’s odds. A positive edge means the bettor’s estimated probability of an outcome is higher than the probability implied by the odds. Profitable betting requires finding and exploiting edges consistently.

Expected Value (EV) — The average profit or loss per bet over an infinite number of repetitions. A bet with positive expected value (+EV) is theoretically profitable long-term, even if individual instances lose.

Favourite — The team expected to win, reflected by shorter odds. NBA favourites on the moneyline return less profit than the stake wagered.

Fractional Odds — The traditional UK format. Odds of 5/2 mean a winning 2-pound stake returns 5 pounds profit plus the original stake. Widely used by UK bookmakers as the default display.

Futures — Bets on outcomes determined at the end of the season or a later date: championship winner, MVP, conference champion. Called «outrights» or «ante-post» in traditional UK terminology.

G-O: Handle to Overround

Handle — The total amount of money wagered on a specific market, game or over a time period. NBA handle in the US alone is estimated at 28 to 30 billion dollars annually. The UK does not publish sport-specific handle figures, but the Gambling Commission reports approximately 13.5 million active online accounts per month across all sports.

Handicap — The UK term for point spread. A handicap of +4.5 means the team receives a 4.5-point head start for betting purposes. Functionally identical to the American «spread.»

Hold — The percentage of handle the bookmaker retains as profit after paying out winning bets. The US industry-wide hold rate was 10.15% in 2025. Hold differs from overround: overround is the theoretical margin built into the odds; hold is the actual margin realised after results are settled.

In-Play / Live Betting — Bets placed after a game has started, with odds updating in real time. NBA in-play markets include moneyline, spread, totals, quarter markets and selected props. Also called «in-running» in UK terminology.

Juice — The American term for the bookmaker’s commission on a bet. On a standard NBA spread priced at -110 each side (American odds), the juice is the difference between the 10% premium you pay and the even-money payout. UK equivalent terms are «vig,» «vigorish» or «overround.»

Line — The odds or spread on a given market. «The line is -6.5» means the spread is 6.5 points. «The line moved» means the odds or spread changed.

Moneyline — A bet on which team wins the game outright, with no spread involved. Called «match result» or «to win» at some UK bookmakers. Since NBA games cannot end in a draw, the moneyline has only two outcomes.

Odds — The price at which a bet is offered, reflecting the implied probability of an outcome and the bookmaker’s margin. Displayed in fractional, decimal or American format depending on the platform and user preference.

Over/Under (Totals) — A bet on whether the combined score of both teams will exceed (over) or fall below (under) a number set by the bookmaker. Standard NBA totals lines sit between 210 and 235 depending on the matchup.

Overround — The bookmaker’s theoretical margin, calculated as the sum of implied probabilities across all outcomes in a market minus 100%. An overround of 5% means the bookmaker’s implied probabilities total 105%. The overround is the price you pay for the bookmaker’s service.

P-Z: Parlay to Vig

Parlay — The American term for accumulator. A multi-leg bet where all selections must win. US Representative Paul Tonko has argued that the state-by-state regulatory approach to sports betting is «fundamentally flawed» and risks the integrity of competition — a concern that applies to all bet types but is amplified in parlays where correlated markets can create exploitable pricing.

Player Prop — A bet on an individual player’s statistical output: points scored, rebounds, assists, three-pointers made, or combinations thereof. Player props are the fastest-growing market category in NBA betting.

Point Spread — A handicap applied to a game to create a theoretically equal betting market. The favourite «gives» points; the underdog «receives» them. A spread of -6.5 means the favourite must win by 7 or more to cover.

Push — A result where the final margin exactly matches the spread, resulting in a void bet and returned stake. Pushes occur only on whole-number spreads; half-point spreads eliminate the possibility.

Same Game Parlay (SGP) — A parlay combining multiple selections from the same game: for example, a moneyline pick, a player prop and a game total. Priced using a correlated model rather than simply multiplying independent odds.

Sharp — A professional or highly skilled bettor whose action influences line movement. «Sharp money» refers to wagers placed by these bettors, often used as an indicator of where informed opinion sits.

Steam Move — A rapid, significant line movement caused by coordinated sharp action across multiple bookmakers simultaneously. Steam moves are fast and difficult to exploit but serve as confirmation signals.

Straight Bet — A single wager on one outcome, as opposed to an accumulator or system bet. The simplest and most common bet type.

Unit — A standardised bet amount, typically 1-2% of bankroll. Results expressed in units (e.g., «+3.2 units this week») normalise performance across different bankroll sizes.

Value — A bet where the odds offered imply a lower probability than the bettor’s own assessment. Finding value is the core objective of analytical sports betting.

Vig (Vigorish) — The bookmaker’s margin on a bet. Synonymous with juice, overround and margin. Every bet includes vig; the bettor’s challenge is to find selections where the edge exceeds it. For a complete guide to how odds formats encode vig differently, see my guide to fractional, decimal and American odds.

The Language That Unlocks the Market

Every term in this glossary exists because the concept behind it matters for how you place, manage and evaluate your NBA bets. You do not need to memorise them all before your first wager, but you should understand any term that appears on your betslip before you confirm it. The glossary will be here when you need it.

What does juice mean in NBA betting?

Juice is the bookmaker’s commission built into the odds. On a standard NBA spread priced at 10/11 each side, the juice is the difference between the true 50/50 probability and the slightly worse than even-money price you are offered. It is the cost of placing the bet and is synonymous with vig, vigorish and overround.

What is the difference between handle and hold in basketball wagering?

Handle is the total amount of money wagered on a market or over a period. Hold is the percentage of that handle the bookmaker retains as profit after paying out winners. A bookmaker might take 1 million pounds in NBA handle on a given night and hold 6%, meaning they profit 60,000 pounds. Handle measures volume; hold measures profitability.
